The Fresh Energy of Sharon Little
by Taylor Jensen
With so many artists vying for the attention of the public, it is difficult for new names to become known.
Finding lesser known, up and comers has become a bit of a hobby of mine. I encounter them in small venues or opening for bigger names as they pass through town.
One reason I enjoy these new performers so much is because of the energy and enthusiasm that they often exude in their shows. They aren't jaded or bored or stuck in a routine yet. The whole experience is still so fresh and exciting for them that, where they might lack a little in depth or crowd control, they make up for with their joy at the chance to follow their muse.
In 2008 I came across a performer by the name of Sharon Little. I have not forgotten the power of her performance. When she came out on stage, she looked so little and her body language seemed a bit nervous. Then she opened her mouth to sing. Her voice was so rich and powerful, I was caught off guard. The feeling and emotion that emanated from her songs affected the audience. People were smiling, swaying, and generally enjoying the show. When she spoke, it confirmed my previous experience with new performers. She bubbled over with enthusiasm for her opportunity to be on stage performing. The joy she felt at singing was contagious, and many audience members spoke about how much more they enjoyed her performance than the act she was opening for that day.
Little has the hard luck artist story. She's a high school dropout, whose whole existence revolved around her chance to sing and write music. At the beginning of 2008 she was working as a waitress until she was introduced to Scot Sax of Wanderlust. The two instantly connected and began writing and performing together. The combination was magical, and as they say, a star was born. Within 5 months she was booked to open for such big names as Robert Plant, Alison Krauss and T Bone Burnett among others.
So what has happened since that whirlwind? Sharon released her first album Perfect Time for a Breakdown to positive critic reviews. Beyond that, I haven't heard anything new. Success happened so fast that I'm sure she's needed time to regroup and figure what's next. I'll be keeping an eye open for news on this very promising new artist.
